Gen 1 Montero / Oil leak at the rear end of camshaft
« on: May 07, 2018, 06:37:45 AM »
'87 Montero, G54B engine, has a bad oil leak at the rear of the cylinder head (the firewall end). The FSM shows a circular rubber gasket at the end of the camshaft, and the ASA parts listing also shows a cap in the cylinder head at the cam shaft end. A previous owner tried to seal the cap with silicone sealant but it apparently didn't work.

What is the procedure for replacing the circular rubber gasket and resealing the cap? Is it necessary to remove or loosen the camshaft bearing caps to do this? Is it possible to remove just the metal cap in the cylinder head and just reseal the cap? If so, how is this done?

I don't want to take anything apart unnecessarily. Thanks for the help.

Spring removal questions for SWB Gen 1 owners

I am trying to remove the broken rear leaf springs on my '87 Montero SWB.  If you have done this, how do I get the old mounting pins out, or should I reuse them and the old rubber bushings?

Thanks.
Frank
