Options, options, and opinions from smart and experienced fellows.

None of this happens immediately.

Skies are still open....

Did just that today. I plan to reuse most of the suspension from the Sport. Until I was undoing the cross-member mount, had presumed the front axle to be CAD....happily, not!

Depending on which tires and rims I do eventually use, I've already traded away the 4.9 rear gear set to LT. So, I'd likely stick with 4.625 for 33" or 5.29 for 35". Also, I have one of the unicorn Detroits for the rear and regret not answering Toasty's add for the front Detroit that Earnest now has. At least Montero Ranch contributed the front differential mount to him.

My truck is Starion-fortified, and goes Pssht! No V6 for me, but turbo 4G54.

If you're doing like me, I'm going through this very repair on Pearl right now. The suddenness of this learning experience is frightening? Last Sunday evening, after driving 3 hours home, I met with my friend Brykelle. Together, we dropped the 3.909 front pumpkin she needed for her Max. So, the 'getting that sucker' out included several failed attempts at removing the left side CV joint. I just repeated the same operation today, dropping all the front suspension on a Montero Sport parts car...unable to separate the lower left ball joint...took everything apart.

Sport this afternoon:

Two teardowns in 6 days, quite a bit of activity for me.

Once you have unbloted the lower ball joint bolts and separated the knuckle from the LCA and UCA, the CV slides out of the hub. Now, you can leave in place or pull.

Seats are not compatible. In disgust, I've left the Sport seats out for two years. The cats like them

Front diff is 4.9, but I'll be using a V6 Montero Gen 1 diff with the Aussie locker from L.T. I've not settled on a gear ratio.

You fit all the front suspension parts up? Taller, wider?

Finishing what I can scavenge from the 2002 Sport parts car before I rehome it.

What else can I use on Pearl?

1. Grabbed UCAs just now. CVs, too?
2. Steering parts like box, tie rods, idler?
3. Fuel tank? Has 3 gallons more capacity, and a built in FI fuel pump....bonus over noisy, no longer functioning external pump on truck now.
4. What else?

Just swap your ARB into a 92/93 Gen 2 rear axle, 9" ring gear...

This was the OE piece in my Raider, had been the AM/FM radio and a tray.

What? Another f-ing year has almost gone by? Pearl is now in a garage! I've been married over 25 years, have lived at numerous houses with garages, and Pearl is the first. I've started taking apart the rear suspension to replace the Max rear axle and LSD with a Montero Sport disk brake rear axle that will house one of the unicorn Detroit lockers. LT is providing an Aussie locker for the front, yay for Pearl....that AZ Crew Detroit would still be welcome...hint hint. These are the two major improvements I've made over the last year. My kids are now in college and doing very well, but work takes me away and the weather / other ranch-related projects still keep me busy and away from Pearl.

I've gone through a couple nicknames for this rig, and think I've settled on Freddie Mercury, The Mountaineer. Since acquiring this rig, I racked up about 6K miles and the Ford expectations have been realized. Many parts have been obsoleted through the dealer, especially my critical front propeller shaft. The Rzeppa joint was a really bad idea! The rubber boot failed long ago and sucked up sand and salt while in Oregon. Finally grenaded that joint and Freddie went from comfortable in snow AWD to Oh crap in the the snow 2wd. One of the serpentine belt idler pulleys froze and knocked the belt off, leaving my driveway...day of work lost. A mechanic my wife liked changed the leaking valve cover gaskets, but broke the fragile EGR tube, resulting in the typical 'tap tap tap' exhaust leak noted on this vehicle model. Since installing the hitch, I've towed most of my trailers around, even gathering Mitsubishi parts and doing dump runs. While I know this will never be a dirt road car, it is comfortable for daily commute and returns 15 - 17 mpg thus far, acceptable to me. Still need the rumbly muffler and a front end alignment.
