Gen 1 Montero / Rear brakes

Doing some research for upgrading my Gen 1 (3.0 V6, Petrol, 5-manual) with Gen 2 parts.
I currently have rear drum brakes. These are shot, so I need new brakes. I would rather get disc brakes (more stopping power and easier maintenance), so looking into the options of fitting Gen 2 disc breaks.
Used Gen 2 parts are hard to come by in my neck of the woods, so the chance of getting a 96 rear axle with disc brakes and diff lock (the most preferred rear axle swap if my research is correct) is very slim. There are some Gen 2 rear axles available though. Found a 1992 2.5 TD, 1993 2.5 TD, 1995 2.8 TD, 1995 3.5 Petrol. As I understand swapping these complete axles will be difficult. So I was wondering if it is possible to 'just' strip the axle shafts with the disc brakes of a Gen 2 rear axle and switch these with the axle shafts with drum brakes on my Gen 1. (This would mean I would keep my current diff.)
Any advice/knowledge is much appreciated!
