In the case of this radiator it is about 1.5 time stock, the gen 2 unit is over 2x.  In terms of the 4cy units, no one has expressed interest in doing a run. Though based on my time in the starquest groups the inlet and outlet locations of starquest radiators are the same as the montero, if so you could use any of the units made for them by modding the mounts and shroud brackets or use 240sx radiator as many of the starquest guys do. I can have the MFG get me pricing for the 4cyl (what sort of cooling did you want) and did want to retain the fan clutch?

So, almost twice the heat removal of stock?

Any plans for 4-cyl applications like SWB Montero or Max?

thow a 3.8 long block in there.

So my suggestion is to take off the pan and inspect it and do a leak down on it. Then change the vss and all the seals. I can help you in the next week or two with this.

They are specific to the 3.5 L full size truck and Evo model. There are two type a Chinese made version and US made. US made is going to have an open group buy for them. Chinese are made to order and shipped to you.

Thanks Kalieracer. Also, the high performance radiators you mentioned, are they specific to the Montero or require modification(s) to be used? If the latter, do you have any links to where they can be purchased?

10
That is not for gas gen 2 and it is plastic and alloy vs the stock brass cooper or high performance tig welded alloy unit. It will cool fine just not last off road or cool more than stock.

I noticed on Amazon there is a Koyo brand radiator under the MB890951- I always thought Koyo was a good brand, however, it in this case is it still inferior to the OEM?

11
So this sorta depends on your cooling system setup. Radiator and such. 180 is still fine, you can always cover up part of radiator to get more heat in the system

Would a lower temp thermostat be detrimental for the engine? What is supposed to be the normal operating temperature? My truck will see freezing temperatures, but a lot more triple digits in standstill traffic or hot days wheeling. I was thinking of getting the 170 or 180 thermostat but I'm not sure if they will let the truck warm up properly in freezing conditions. I'll be upgrading other bits of the cooling system as needed but currently I have a non oem thermostat, so that's on top of the list.

2003-2006 3.8 Timing belt and heavy maintenance list. Just a reminder for everyone 100k /60k or 5 years for the first belt depending on where you live and what year truck you have and then 60k or 5 years.. Does not matter if you went 20k in the 5 years do the timing belt service the rubber cracks and dries out. Coolant in most cases is on a shorter cycle. Plugs are 90-100k

Jamie Poulos thanks for going through and cross referencing a good chunk of the part numbers.  Download the Excel or attached jpg

Gen 3 Montero / Re: Pulling the Engine - Torque Converter first, why?

Generally the trans, motor and are dropped together with the front subframe on newer cars.

Yes I completely agree.  I am extremely impressed and bewildered when I see pictures of complete engines pulled out of Montero's.  How the heck did they reach the bell housing bolts?

Anyway, here are photos of the half-completed job:

Does anyone know if this is a Reman?
