Gen 2 Montero / Considering a Gen 2 again.
« on: September 17, 2020, 06:24:58 AM »
Well, itís been a couple years since Iíve been on here since I sold my 95 LS.   Family life happened and we needed cash for some other things, so the toys had to go. However, I am considering another capable rig again and still miss many aspects of the Gen 2 Montero.

I have purposely avoided looking for any because I remember there isnt a huge aftermarket or product support like there is for the other household names (Cherokee, 4Runner,, etc.)... but, then I also remember these are more comfortable and will out perform those other products in stock condition and have many factory do dadĎs not offered by competitors.

So my big question for this Monteiro/Pajero Subculture isÖ Is there still a solid support group for these rigs? Or have most jumped ship to the newer rigs with more product support?

Iíve got my eyes on a 95 SR with fairly low miles (under 100,000).  It needs a few things like CV boots, unknown of timing has ever been done, plus some general elbow grease to get the thing cleaned up. Iím just wondering if there is still any kind of a following for these?  I donít care about popularity, but I still like to have reliable resources and knowledgeable people out there to consult with as things break or I consider more modifications.

Anyway, thoughts or opinions are welcomed.

Raising the price after no takers? One of the older tricks in the book. I've found it to be effective, too.

Lack of maintenance records would scare me off, too. I'd be in the same boat if I ever sold mine, though, too. All I have is a pile of receipts for parts, in no particular order, and no real verification of who did what, except for the good words of the AZ Crew, and that only goes so far.

John B.

I knew this guy was just raising to get the low ballers to offer closer to his bottom line.

My biggest problem was that he only had the thing for a short time, had no clue what he was selling and kept trying to tell me that if we agree on a deal, I canít come kick tires and take it for a test drive.

He insisted it had a 6Ē suspension lift, and a front locker.  When I told him it looked like a 2Ē suspension and 2Ē body lift and came with a factory rear locker, he tried to tell me I was wrong and it was all custom built.  He swore there was at least $4k put into the rig by the PO.

Well buddy... if Iím driving over 4 hours with a car trailer, that should say Iím serious and Iím gonna look it over as good as I can in the field since he couldnít tell me anything legit about it.  I was really interested since it had under 100k on the odometer.  I even carfaxed it and the mileage on the registration records match up with the claimed mileage.

Heíll probably get his asking price eventually, but not to anybody who has any moderate amount of knowledge of Monteros.

Any decisions on this? I live in Colorado and have seen this SR on CL for a while now. Did you buy it or pass it up?

I tried to work with the guy on a trade (dirt bike + cash), but he backed out at the last minute and doesnít understand how critical maintenance records are.  I told him i basically have to assume a full timing job and some overall maintenance costs, but he still insists itís a mint condition rig.

After forgetting about it for a couple of weeks, I saw he raised the price $500... not sure on his reasoning when there were no takers at his original price.

After several discussions, I just didnít have a good gut feeling on it, so I stopped pursuing it.

Well I finally got the guy to send me a picture of the title today so I could verify some things on the SR.  I pulled the entire vehicle history and everything checks out... no negatives, accidents, repos, theft etc.  also looking at the reported mileageís on the registration history shows that the mileage claimed is probably accurate.

Iím hoping to take the 4 hour drive to see it in person this weekend.  I already know from some of the other pics he sent me, that it has a body lift, but I fully expect to see coil spacers and cranked torsions... but I may be surprised and find actual new coils and aftermarket torsion bars, you never know.

If I put values on other stuff, there are about $1,000 in BFG KM2 tires, Centerline Hellcat wheels $800 - $1,000 in their day, brush guard (needs stripped and painted/powder coated), winch, roof rack needing some cosmetic love also.
Anyway, a couple grand in extras that make the SR route more appealing.

As someone on the Facebook page  said, ďtake the path of least resistanceĒ.  If the SR checks out, it would definitely be the easiest route to my end goal, plus lower miles and more power than my current ride.

Iíll keep yíall posted...

I mean I would LOVE a low mileage SR but that one looks pretty rough. Have you done a carfax on it?

He just sent me a picture of the title this morning and I pulled history on it today.  Everything looks good, no negatives on the report and the reported mileage from registration in AZ and CO all match up with what he reports to be on it now.

Im gonna try to take the drive to see it in person this weekend.  Iíll bring a trailer with, just in case I end up coming home with it.

Surprisingly, The Facebook page has offered some good feedback within a couple of hours.  It appears that the veteran Montero guys are the ones who respond the quickest with legitimate advice.

I posted this on the Facebook page, but bought Iíd ask here too.  Maybe more experienced Montero advice here.

I am on the verge of spending some significant money on my 95íLS.  My original plans were to get ahold of a cheap SR and  do all of the expected (axle swap, gears, rebuild the 3.5 and swap, buy all of the ADD Gen 2 stuff, etc.)

However, in my search for a beater SR, I stumbled across a pretty clean unit, 98,000 miles with some mods done already.  It got me thinking... do I just sell my LS and get this SR, or keep on with my original plans.

Keep in mind...my LS is in tip top shape and I would have a more intimate knowledge of its workings after doing all the work.  However, Iíd probably have to spend a bunch more money to get where I want as opposed to just buying the clean SR.

I have already talked to Adam (Toasty) and Iíve got his opinion, but thought Iíd check with the masses.

Thoughts...

Mine is the blue and the white is the SR that Iím considering.

That thing looks great dude, seeing it on my computer really shows it's been cared for.

So you still think I should keep it and swap SR drivetrain components in, rather than buy that Other SR I showed ya?
Iíll be leaning on yíall for help and advice either way.

Not much in the way of a build.  But I forgot to add my plates picture to the original introduction.
No mistakes on whose vehicle this is if you see it on the road somewhere.

I miss my big red pig  :'( the 650r is one hell of a bike. great lookin truck man  8)

I love the BRP too, but I am considering selling it...
Sadly, it may be the only way for me to come up with the spare cash I need to keep working in the Montero.  It will be a last resort, but my efforts will be more focused on the Montero than the bike from here on out.

Hi yíall,

I figured after a year on Expedition Portal and now as a new member on here, I might as well introduce myself and my rig.

My name is Brian and I live in Montrose, CO - elevation 5,807.  We are surrounded by 13í000í -14,000í mountains to the south and east, the Grand Mesa to our north and the Utah state line is 58.5 miles to our west... Moab is a couple hours away.

My personalized plates on every rig I have ever built match my handle which simply means:
Be iN Z MounTaiNS.

I come from an extensive background with full size Chevys, straight axle and IFS, but have recently taken an interest in Monteros, because of their straight forward, purpose built, overly engineered design.  My wife and small children got tired of bouncing around in my clunky straight axle K5 and so that prompted me to get something a bit more family friendly.

About a year ago I found a clean specimen.  A minty 95í LS.  It was apparently owned since new by an older couple.  They were religious about maintenance and had all services performed at Mitsu dealers.  I have every service record from the day it was new, including oil changes, and tire rotations.
After the husband died, the former service manager at the Mitsu dealership found out the wife was selling it and purchased it, since he knew every detail about it and itís care.  He drove it for about a year and decided to cut down on the amount of vehicles in his herd, so it popped up on Craigslist about 3 hours from me... and here I come with some cash and home with a super clean Montero.

It is all stock aside from manual hubs and 31ís.  But my plans involve the usual... SR axles, maybe re-gear, some lift, 33ís (maybe 35ís), possibly a 3.5 swap and some other overlandish mods or family camping trips.

I have already appreciated gleaning useful information from this site and other Montero friendly sites.  I look forward to sharing my progress with you and the helpful advice that  will come along the way.

My last Chevy Build (3 years from stock to this)

My LS the night I brought it home

He even included a set of factory service manuals

After a nice bath

I have not has the time or funds to do much with it over the last year, but it gets me where I like to go anyway.

Till next time
