Gen 2 Montero / 1995 Montero SR Engine Removal
« on: July 30, 2020, 04:02:07 PM »
Hello!  I purchased and have been driving a 1995 Montero SR for the last two years.   This is my second Montero (my first was a Gen 1).  The vehicle has 165K miles and I've done all of the key maintenance including new timing belt, water pump, hoses, and intake plenum.   The engine runs strong but burns a quart of oil per tank and smokes at idle.   So it appears I need to replace the valve stem seals.  I know it's possible to do this with the engine in the vehicle but have heard it is a PITA.  So I'm planning on pulling the engine to do this job which is something I've never done before.   The removal process is fairly well explained in the Chilton's manual but I'm curious if there are any tricky parts that I need to be aware of, any special tools I need, or anything I should know to make the process go smoother.  Also want to know how long it typically takes and where I should connect the hoist to on the engine or how I should strap it. when raising.    Thanks!
