How are those NiLite Creed LEDs holding up?

I am thinking of buying a set. From the pics...the light output is pretty clean and bright.

Sorry for the delay. I've had no issues with the NiLites. Every time I put this thing into reverse at night I'm glad I did the mod. They've saved the Monty's ass a number of times from parking lots to backing through mountain trails.

Great post, very inspiring. I love the details for the platform bed. Does it rattle when you drive? Did you attach the particle board platform to the frame or the weight keeps it secure? Thanks

Thanks. We put this build through the works over the summer with twenty nights of camping and around 8,000 miles of touring without any issues. The box of the insert is bolted to the bed using existing hardware from the seat removal. The drawers are packed so nothing rattles around. We've slept comfortably and our dogs love to travel on it.

If you're new to the Gen 3 Montero, the main issue is there's very little aftermarket support if you're looking to do an aggressive build. It thrives as the Pajero/Shogun in Asia, Australia and Europe where there are great aftermarket offerings, but the Montero fizzled here in the States.

Mitsubishi missed the marketing train on the Paris/Dakar victories, an opportunity to position the Montero nicely against British and other Japanese offerings, not to mention the Big Three's SUV inventory, which were posers at best at the time. Instead they focused on AWD rally cars with Subaru in their sights. Not to mention Mitsu's almost devastating $0 $0 $0 marketing campaign from which they're still recovering.

This not only made the Montero a wall flower, it squelched any incentive for aftermarket development for both the Sport and full-size platform, a good thing for used purchase price and the bane for anyone looking to modify. Stock, the Montero already has a robust drive-train, some models with standard limited slip differential and respectable nine-inch ground clearance. The driving position is best in its class, its outward visibility is terrific, rearward by comparison is great and the cabin is well-appointed and thought out with one of the largest sunroofs offered.

Apparently Mitsu figured the American market would stick to Jeeps, leaving the Gen 3 Montero with plastic bumper caps and a departure angle rivaling UPS trucks. Aftermarket wheel offerings are limited given some models' air pressure sensors and its huge center hub and the V6 has a tendency to pressure oil through the rear main.

With the sleeping platform insert there aren't many ways to stow flat rigid items and yet there are two that are indispensable to our travels, a folding step and a folding table. The step is used around the rig when packing the roof rack and it gives my dog a literal leg up in hopping into the back.

The table is an 18X20" GCI compact camp table that's just right for dining for two of us or to get gear off the tent floor.



With the previous mod of the utility shelf eliminated it opened some real estate on the rear door where these items could be stowed. It all works around the Camillus hatchet/door handle well and the placement still kept a window to access the interior door lever. Quick Fists are the greatest kit out there for this kind of arrangement.

Shade is a commodity like water where we amble. Trees are sparse in the land that we travel and we've depended on an awning for the decade we've been doing this.

This is our third awning, our second ARB and I was surprised to find some improvements in the product when I slipped it out of its shipping tube.



Gone is the envelope design of the case. This one is tailored, boxed at the ends to better fit the rolled awning with an inverted pouch on both ends to keep the zipper tabs.



Nothing else has changed and doesn't need to. The friction cams on the legs lock tight, the channel material and junction hardware are machined to tuck away and stay put.



The awning is mounted to the Apex Roof Rack using four 3/4 inch rubber lined zinc plated clamps on the vertical stanchions and two 1" clamps on the top rail, under $7 for a solid mount.

The Franklin Rack didn't work out for our needs; too small, not rigid enough. It's found a new home on my son's Gen 3. I replaced it with this Apex Rack, a larger, more rigid platform with parallel vertical posts where a rear awning could be mounted.



The rack builds with a lower base with a welded basket and an upper rail attached with vertical stanchions. The way it comes together; the rack can be separated into two halves, front and rear, with some questionable hardware that clicks the tubes together - nothing that can't be remedied with stainless hardware. It fits well on the stock roof rails with enough rear overhang to mount an awning.



The rack mounts with four U-bolts with thumb bolts. There's plenty of room for recovery gear, Rotopax fuel and water containers, and our Kodiak tent.

I used Duplicolor's Spray Truck Bed Coating to black out the rockers and bumpers. I made the mistake of using their rolled on product to begin with, resulting in bad surface continuity.



The coating was sealed at the seam to the factory finish with 1/4" pin striping in signal orange as a nod to the Montero/Pajero's history with the Camel Trophy.

Really enjoyed your first Monty on Expo, so when you got the H3 (and I liked them too, I have to admit) I was disappointed that we were 'losing you' to a different marque. SO HAPPY you're back! Great detail as usual, and unusual solutions to usual problems. We are lucky to have you here.  :)

Wow, thank you. That's humbling. I'm happy to be back, especially behind the wheel of a Monty. And I'm the lucky one here - thanks for letting me post.

Hahah the longer I work around cars,  the more my attitude has been "If Bilsteins are available for your application,  and you're not literally doing some kind of specialized racing where you need $1500 coilovers... why on Earth would you get anything other than Bilsteins?"       

I oughtta' work for that company for how much I promote them but for real they're bolt on satisfaction in every application I've tried so far

I had them on my H3 and it felt like my dad's Buick. But, I suspect that was more H3 than Bilsteins.

The driver's side passenger door storage area accommodates two camp chairs, our Volcano grill, portable lu, folding table and other gear.



The leading edge of the platform is protected with a strip of aluminum stair edging.



And the other three sides of the platform are finished with white vinyl wire channel.
