that was the gold fever trail outside big bear, ca - puts you on 2N09, 3N16 and 3N05. we did it "backwards" by starting at the lucky mine, which is traditionally one of the last stops. the nice thing about starting early and going in the east-to-west direction was having the trail all to ourselves until we started seeing people going the other way about 2.5 hours into the trip.

headlight doors are aftermarket off of eBay. pretty good price considering you get the pair plus all the mounting hardware. about what i paid for a set at the LKQ yard... https://www.ebay.com/itm/New-Set-of-2-Pack-Headlight-Door-Bezel-Left-Right-Side-Black-LH-RH-Dodge/352363132594

still enjoying the hell out of this little truck - the meet-ups with other monteros and friends, and the trail runs around southern california are precisely why i worked to find one like this, and then spent so much time asking questions and fixing it up. really grateful to the folks here at ADD (past and present) for the advice and help.

picked up some aftermarket headlight doors to replace the 30-year-old, cracked and brittle plastic - they seem just like the originals as far as quality goes. a bit of flash to trim off, but otherwise look perfect.

also spent some time in the snow. dual LSDs really seem to be the ticket for a lightweight truck, and i didn't run into much trouble in deep, fresh snow.

glad you decided to resurrect this one! easy upgrades i can recommend: junkyard gen 2 SR springs in the back give a little lift and have better response than stock springs; bilstein 4600s have been a fantastic improvement on and off the trail for me; if you can find the LSD out of a starion, it bolts up to replace your open front diff on your rig - grrrrrreat on the trail in the event you want more than open diff but don't want a locker up there; gen 2 trailing arms are regarded as more substantial than stock - another easy junkyard pull.

keep the pics coming - that raider red is pretty iconic.

cheers - john

sign up for notifications from Row32 and LKQ so you'll hear about it when one turns up. mine came from a montero owner that had decided to go with a locker instead. good hunting!

really enjoying this build thread! don't worry - you can find the LSD and the bouncy seats in the junkyard with some patience. there's also the opportunity with this rig to pull the LSD from a Starion and it is a direct fit for the FRONT diff.

keep the pics coming!

for what it might be worth, i'm on the list of pre-orders for the gen 1 skids. i'm most interested in the fuel tank protection - i understand that you want to sell out on the front skid before developing the next section, but maybe just as a feeler, you could post a pre-order page for the back to see if there might be more interest?

hope to see more of the montero family on the trail soon...

has been a while since i updated! developed a leak in the front LSD diff, so i had that torn down and all new seals. while it was on the rack, added the torsion bars from a 1992 LWB, which are progressive. also added the gen 2 trailing arms with the ADD Siberian bushing kit - these are all parts that i'd been accumulating, and i'm glad to finally have the chassis and suspension done. once the diff leak was sorted, i was back to a leak-free rig.

next up was the early gen 1 metal grille, courtesy another gen 1 enthusiast - he'd traded a pile of parts to an overseas source to get an MMC-badged grille, but just didn't like the way it looked in the end. my good fortune! he also had a spare set of the Korean-sourced steel headlight and tail light guards that i'd been admiring, so now the exterior accessory checklist is complete.

next task - pull the headliner and recover it - i'm doing that one myself.

last task - bodywork and paint. i plan to do original blue with a silver or light grey on the lower panels, and replace the pinstripes. maybe my christmas present to me. no rush, as i get pretty scratched up on the trail.

Gen 1 Montero / Re: leaking gear oil, front axle
« on: April 12, 2018, 05:22:19 PM »
reckon i should do the other side as well - anything else that would be recommended preventative maintenance? like something with the CVs? my boots look okay, but if it's going on a lift, i'd like to be smart about it...

thanks, russell!

Gen 1 Montero / leaking gear oil, front axle
« on: April 12, 2018, 03:31:21 PM »
gen 1, 1989 V6 SWB with the starion LSD in the front.

looks like i have a leak on both ends of the axle, right side front. described on pages 2-15 and 2-16 of the FSM, but I can't find the part numbers. anyone done this R&R work and have some advice to offer?

see pics
