Gen 3 4.90 gear upgrade
« on: September 30, 2017, 06:45:07 AM »
Hello. I have a 2006 montero limited handed down to me from my wife.  ;)
I want to regear it by swapping front and rear carrier gears (4.90 ratio) from the 4 speed gen 3.
This is in preparation to move up to 34 tires.
I have a lead on a 4 speed montero at a yard where you pick and pull parts.

My reason for posting is to learn what I need to take off of this 2001 4 speed montero.

Do I need just the differential carrier from the axle assembly?  Will these directly bolt into the axle assemblies on my 2006?

You need just the carriers front and rear, double check the ID plate to confirm 4.90 gears.

Thanks for the reply TOASTY.  I'm attempting to attach pages from the FSM highlighting the items that I'll be grabbing, but I get an error like this when I preview the post:

What do I need to do to attach files on this site?

Looks like the attachment worked.

Here is the attachment for the rear.
