1999 2.5 Rescue
« on: October 04, 2017, 03:17:45 PM »
I picked this up last Friday.

Went way out to middle of nowhere Oklahoma to acquire.  The motor is strong and 4X4 works well.  Air compressor and locker work too.
It's going to take a bit of work to get things up to par.  Previous owner "modified" some of the wiring.  When I say "modified" I mean cut.  The headlights were re-wired to a switch which hangs down from the rear view mirror.

There is a dent in the rear quarter panel where the PO covered it with sheet metal attached with rivet.

There is also a howl when driving which I suspect comes from vibrations of this sheet metal.  Could be something else too.
Many dash lights are lit.  Since there is now rear passenger side caliper, i suspect that's why the brake lights are on.

Did find a nice dash ornament to distract from the flaws.

3 different sized tires

Lot's to get done!  Any suggestions or ideas are welcome.

Wow there's some janky stuff there to un- :o

Hopefully you can just cut out some lower quarter panel from a junkyard truck and cut out that... rivet.. thing and whatever's behind it.

How's it look under the hood?

Engine looks good.   10 disc chnger is still in the back and it works!

Didn't you all recently dismantle a 2.5?  If you are planninmg on selling some parts, I'm buying.

So, I will be replacing the timing belt, water pump, seals and all the other stuff associated with front of motor removal.  Previous owner had no idea when it was last serviced.  Though the motor runs well, it's a ticking time bomb.  After that, I will tackle the wiring.

All the rear outside door handles are are broken.  Inside handles were not working either.  Had to take off the inner door panels while the door is shut.  (it's not really hard on the gen2's)
Turns out the "Child Safety Locks were engaged.

The "Howl" was from the lack of gear oil in the rear diff.  I pulled the drain plug and got about 3 ounces of oil out.  Replaced with 3.3 quarts, according to the FSM, and it proceeded to leak out of the right rear of the housing.  As you can see from the pictures, this rig was in an accident of some sort.  The PO removed the whole brake assembly from that side of the axle and cut off pinched the brakes lines to both rear wheels.  I think at this point I will find a new rear end for this one.  Seems like too much damage has been done to try to make this one work.

Good call on the rear child safety locks. The 98 I picked up had inoperable rear windows according to the PO.  It was the window lock switch.  I'll have to check the locks tonight on that. If/when you do the t-belt I would be down to help/learn if the timing works out.

You're in Norman right?  Timing belt... My SR was a nightmare because we had to take it apart many times due to a faulty crank sensor issue.  This was after the timing belt had been replaced.  So it was like replacing the timing belt 6 times.  SR is DOHC and 99 is SOHC so I think things will go better for this one.  Do you have any extra parts for the 2.5's?

This sticker is on the underside of the hood.  Anybody know what all that means?

Also found the original window sticker in the glove box.

Funny, in 2000 I paid $30545.00 less than this for my 1990 LS...

That's the twin of my 99.  Will you shoot me a scan of that window sticker?

Thanks,
