Ya'all Are Cool, So Please Tolerate This
« on: December 01, 2017, 11:31:06 AM »
I bought an FZJ80.  Don't burn me at the stake.

Will be mild/tasteful/clean wifemobile.   :-X

There will be a fly 'n' drive report late this coming week.

DETAILS

What is it? 1994 Toyota Land Cruiser
Is it triple-locked?  No.  My wife will not find those necessary to get to work and back.
Miles:  206k

PLANS
We're going to follow the same template set by my wife's last two SUV DDs.  (2000 XJ Cherokee and 2003 Montero)

1) Small lift, looking at OME HD springs with Bilstein 5100s thru ADD
2) 33" tires, probably Cooper ST Maxx.  Maybe a 285/75r16
3) Stereo.  This will require some work, but planning on Sony Android Auto double din, Soundstream Nano 5 channel amp, a smallish sub, and whatever 6.5" components i can get in the doors without looking awful.
4) Lighting.  Probably Depo housings, possibly with an H1 projector retrofit.
4.5) Convert all exterior running/brake lights to LED.  Possibly a pair of the nicer-looking aftermarket tail lights
5) ARB front bumper.  Possibly.  Maybe.  Mostly for looks, but hey, that's all that matters sometimes.
6) De-wood interior.  We hate it.
7) Recover front seats and add seat heaters.

Current issues:
1) Small leak from front diff
2) Has wood interior
3) Front seats are trashed
4) Tires are trashed
5) Brakes feel gross
6) Doesn't look "butch" enough

You know... swinging through your neck of the woods "only" adds about 5-6 hours to the trip.  Is my order ready?  :D

Happy family.  I'll do a better trip write up with more pictures tomorrow likely.  But she's home.

It'll be Toyotas here.  The FJ80 is really the last land cruiser we like, but we both like the FJ Cruiser and Gen4 4Runner (which we were actually shopping for when we got the FJ80.), and i wouldn't mind a Tundra for towing the race car.

100% being honest here:  The only reason i hang on to my Gen2.5 is because it looks cool.  But sometimes that's enough.  :)

I'm diggin toyota. they act like they still care about us {trd pro} plus the landcruiser 200 is a solid rig. I know some guys dont like the gx470's but they're good too. fj cruisers  rule also. That new F-ATC or whatever also says their interested in making an electric off_roader

90% of the reason why I got my 2.5 was because it looks cool.

But really I'd love to have a FJ62, I just can't justify spending 3-4x the amount I spent on my Montero for one.

Here's a quick 'n' dirty write up on the trip and the truck.  :)

Tuesday, December 5th, boarded my 1st Class flight (Priorities!) to fly into Sacramento to pick up my wife's new DD.  I was greeted with views.

And G&Ts.

The PO picked me up at the airport in the truck, SUPER nice guy, couldn't have asked for a nicer seller to accomodate a fly 'n' drive.  It was obvious that he loved the truck very much and was happy that it was going to someone who felt strongly enough about these rigs to fly across the country for a good one.  After doing the deal (And installing some modified HIR2 bulbs in the low beams), i drove to Harbor Freight to take advantage of their tool loan program.  (Buy tool kit, throw in back of truck, drive across country, return at home store if you don't use it.)

Met a friend that had looked at my 2.5 for me (Which was also purchased outside of Sacramento 2 years ago) for lunch, then carried on my way.  This was the same route i took in the Montero, so it was a little surreal stopping at all the same places, not even on purpose.  First rest stop.  Strangely possibly even in the same space....

And in the Montero 2 years prior.

Continued on my way into Utah, driving into the dawn.

Climbing up, the mighty 1FZ flexing with its absurd ability to just grunt up anything with cruise control on in overdrive.  (Seriously, how do people call this thing underpowered?)

Stopped off at the Salt Flats, because how can you not?  Tires were questionable, so no epic pictures like with the 2.5.

The visibility was incredible vs the constant snows of the trip 2 years ago.  I saw Yellowstone in the distance to the north at some point.  Had to have been 100 miles away.

Got a little ugly from time to time, but nothing like what i pounded through with the Monty.  Felt fine.  Full time 4wd also gave some feelings of security, however false they may be.

Once over The Divide, the trip was pretty uneventful and mind-numbing, besides the absolutely atrocious roads in Illinois.

Driving into another dawn.

After one last annoyance, that being a 1.5 hour delay getting to my house after arriving in my home city due to two separate truck accidents shutting down the two major highways that run by my house, the Cruiser had landed.

Gas stats, general thoughts on the truck, and a couple issues that need to be addressed.  Current issues and build plans will always stay updated on 1st post.

Gas:
Gallons burned: 141.028
Miles driven: 2283.1
Dollars spent: $392.76
Average MPG: 16.19

The trip took 48 hours on the nose from the time the plane touched down, to me getting home.  That included getting to the seller's house, doing the deal, all stops, etc.  I could have chopped an easy 8 hours off of that but i started the trip tired from some last minute home issues that popped up the night before.  I would not recommend a trip like that in the state i was in.  Luckily i'm a pretty mentally strong person and know when to pull off for a nap.

Thoughts on FZJ80:
So far, this truck is everything the internet says it is (except underpowered).  It feels ridiculously solid and tight, even after 206k miles.  It's not sporty, it's not fast, it's not particularly engaging to drive, but it's very... satisfying.  I'm unsure how i feel about it vs. a Gen2 Montero, but i can safely and honestly say that as a dedicated highway pounder or 100% street truck, it doesn't really do anything better than a Gen3.  It does most things worse.  It's slower, gets worse gas mileage (though runs happily on 87 octane.), and has a lot more wind noise.  Steering ratio is ridiculously slow, and it's fairly dated inside.  We loved our Gen3 for what it was, but wanted to return to our roots of simple and reliable anvils that i can repair/maintain myself.  The fact that the FZJ80 is an appreciating asset and the Gen3 isn't, is icing on the cake.  I love the 1FZ, this thing didn't lose a DROP of oil the entire trip.  I prefer the layout of the interior and the ease of folding the rear 2 and 3 rows up and down of the FZJ80 vs the Gen3.  The FZJ80 looks almost too classy for us.  It will need to be butched up.

Things wrong/need attention/annoyances:
1) Small leak from front differential area.  Leaving 2-3 drops a night.
2) Stereo is awful.  And replacing speakers in this thing is apparently an exercise in annoyance, due to stupid shapes, placements, and depths.
3) Low beam output is awful, even with the HIR2 bulb upgrade.  High beams are ridiculously bright, so that's a head scratcher.
4) Steering feels.... heavy.  We don't mind it, but i'm unsure if this is normal.  No weird noises, catches, or clunks.
5) Steering wheel squeaks on the column cover.  Watching some other Youtube videos of these trucks, seems a lot of them do it.
6) Tires are shot and old.
7) Brake pedal feels gross.  Soft and spongy, and starts to stop HARD before you encounter any resistance.  As someone who doesn't drive often and rarely drives the same vehicle twice in a row, this is hard to get used to.  Front pads are suspect, will replace them and bleed the brakes well before firing a money gun.  Similar situation on my Gen2.5, except the 2.5 also doesn't stop worth a damn.
