Axle Tech
« on: February 02, 2018, 07:11:49 PM »
I'll start a new axle thread. I'll add the Flange diameters later when i get home, this thread will later be added to the WIki! I'll also add the 5.29 info from Phil and Ernest's thread. Feel free to add to this thread and i will add approved tech into this first post and delete the replies to keep it clean. Thanks!

Axle Data

Gen 1

2.6, 2.3TD, 2.5TD & 2.5TDI (some) :-
95mm CV joints
front axle = 25 spline, 29mm diameter, diff = 7.25" diameter (low pinion)
rear axle = 28 spline, 30.5mm diameter, diff = 8" diameter
3.0V6 :-
Automatic 95mm CV joints, Manual 100mm CV Joints
front axle = 28 spline, 29mm diameter, diff = 8" diameter (low pinion)
rear axle = 28 spline, 30.5mm diameter, diff = 9" diameter
9" Pinion flange will work on Gen 2 9" as well (SIZE)

Gen 2

3.0V6 :-
Automatic 95mm CV joints, Manual 100mm CV Joints
same as Gen 1 except for NH & NJ auto has 7.25" diameter front diff (high pinion) NH & NJ 5sp man has 8" diameter front diff (high pinion)
2.5TDI :-
same as NH & NJ auto
3.5V6 & 2.8TDI :-
100mm CV joints on all Except 99-00 3.5 SOHC which have 95mm CV (Always check bell to confirm)
front axle = 28 spline, 29mm diameter, diff = 8" diameter (high pinion)
rear axle = 31 spline, 33.5mm diameter, diff = 9.5" diameter
9.5" pinion flanges are all the same (SIZE) except the 1994 SR (SIZE), the 1994 also uses a unique U-joint and does not have interchangeable yokes with the 9" lower driveshaft yoke. For installing the 9.5" in a Gen 1 use the more common 9.5" (SIZE) flange with the matching yoke on the Gen 1 driveshaft (REMEMBER 1994 IS DIFFERENT!)

Gen 3

3.5V6, 2.8TDI, 3.2DID, 3.8V6

front axle = 28 spline, 29mm diameter, diff = 8" diameter (high pinion)
Automatic 95mm CVs

rear axle = 33 spline, 36mm diameter, diff = 9.5" diameter
Automatic 125mm CVs
