Other bumpers that fit? Swing-aways?
« on: June 11, 2018, 08:58:53 PM »
I can't swing $2k+ on something specific, so I'm curious if there are other platforms we know make good starting points.

Like, the Xterra appears to use a similarly styled rear bumper. Maybe the center section with the good bits might fit or just be relatively easily modified?

Assume I'm a stupid newbie who hasn't the foggiest where to even start searching on this one. (And OMG, have I seen a LOT of that awful, diamond plated, square tin can bumper Dad had on his Silverado.)

I've got a drawing for this bumper you're envisioning and it's quite similar to what you posted. The bumper I sketched up allows you to used the stock end caps, but has options for more hardcore things, it has a swing out and other mounts and was gonna come in a couple of ways.

I'll talk to you about it offline though, it's still in design phase and I havent had time for much lately.

funny thing is I have a custom bumper with a swing out on it.... and I actually took the swing arm off and just purchased a factory spare mount for the rear door. Swing outs look cool on instagram but it in my case it adds a ton of unnecessary leverage and weight to a vehicle that already is capable of lugging around a full-size spare up to 35". My greatest advise is get a swing out that swings out with the door and not opposite the door. Creates a hallway effect and a narrow one at that.

Yep, and that tire hanger is handy for hauling bikes, fuel, etc. AND tires. I'd also argue that the gen2 already comes with a rear bumper too. Gen3's come with a rear "bumper".

I've been interested in this too.

Mainly because with the spare mount on the rear door, it's a huge PITA to put on/take off my Trasharoo.

That and I already dropped one of my bumper end caps on a ledge and it's all bent outta wack.

I mostly want a swing out  (or two) for The Gram.

And with two, i could carry other stuff.

Appreciate the insights, fellas.

I know the factory tailgate is basically a swing-out/swing-away carrier, but mine's been shoved in by a Camry, so if I'm going to replace it, I might as well use that space for fuel cans, a hi-lift, or such.

Had a chance to chat with Josh yesterday. I think I'm good for now. My bumper is munched, but there's no deflection to the frame, so we'll see.

Thanks.
